For centuries, wind was the sole engine of global trade. The advent of steam and heavy fuel oil eventually relegated sails to the history books, but as the maritime industry faces an existential mandate to decarbonize, the wind is making a high-tech comeback. At the forefront of this movement is bound4blue, a Spanish-born innovator proving that wind isn’t just a nostalgic relic — it is a measurable, bankable, and highly efficient propulsive asset for the 21st-century fleet.

bound4blue’s founders saw a growing disconnect between the speed of climate regulation and the practical solutions available to shipowners. Alternative fuels promised long-term potential but also introduced uncertainty around infrastructure, scalability, safety, and cost. The challenge was not whether wind could propel vessels — it had done so for thousands of years — but whether it could be transformed into a reliable, measurable, and commercially viable propulsion technology for modern vessels.

The physics of "active lift"

Vessels rely on the thrust delivered by their main engine for propulsion. These engines burn enormous amounts of fuel, resulting in large fuel bills and pollutant emissions levels. Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS) take advantage of the available wind to generate clean forward thrust, reducing the engine thrust required and consequently cutting fuel consumption and pollutant emissions.

bound4blue’s eSAIL® produces six to seven times more lift than a conventional sail. In other words, it can deliver the same propelling force with six to seven times less surface. All this with minimal power consumption and no mechanical complexity, ensuring simple, safe, and reliable operations. When installed on a vessel, the eSAIL® is designed so that its high-lift ability maximises fuel savings in a cost-efficient way.

Measuring impact in a hard-to-abate sector

Shipping has historically been sceptical of environmental performance claims—and for good reason. Fuel consumption at sea depends on multiple variables including weather, routing, vessel loading, speed, and operational behaviour. Demonstrating that a technology genuinely reduces fuel consumption is therefore far more complex than comparing fuel bills before and after installation.

From an early stage, bound4blue understood that if wind propulsion was going to scale, measurement credibility would become as important as the technology itself. To address this, the company developed a performance assessment methodology combining onboard sensor data, weather models, route simulations and operational vessel data.

Fuel savings are not identical across all vessels and routes. Performance depends on wind availability, vessel type, and operational profile. While average verified savings currently range between 15% and 20%, actual results can vary significantly depending on operating conditions.

Verifying impact at industrial scale

In an industry historically sceptical of "green" claims, bound4blue has prioritized transparency and rigorous impact measurement. The technology is no longer in the experimental phase; as of April 2026, it is delivering double-digit savings across a diverse global fleet.

  • Real-World Performance: The eSAIL® has already been installed on 8 vessels, representing a total of 24 units, which have already contributed to 4860 tonnes of fuel savings, 15566 tCO2e avoided, and 133440 MWh of energy savings.
  • Regulatory compliance: The eSAIL® acts as a financial hedge against tightening maritime laws. It directly improves a vessel's Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and expands the lifetime of vessels; bound4blue’s eSAIL® also improves the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and Energy Efficiency Existing Ships Index (EEXI) without reducing the vessel’s speed rating, and reduces exposure to the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and the FuelEU Maritime "Wind Reward Factor.”
There is a better way to decarbonize shipping than solely switching to alternative fuels or applying slow steaming. The eSAIL® enables the shipping industry to reduce its environmental footprint and cut fuel costs, and comply with environmental regulations. One where what’s good for the planet is also good for the maritime industry’s bottom line.

Scaling for a Net-Zero 2050

One of the biggest challenges for climate technologies is moving beyond demonstration projects into industrial deployment. For bound4blue, that industrial scaling phase accelerated significantly in late 2025. In December 2025, bound4blue closed a landmark US$44 million funding round, signalling its shift into full industrialization. The round was led by OCTAVE Capital (an investment platform affiliated with major shipowner IMC) and Katapult Ocean with strategic backing from the Odfjell family office, the ReOcean Fund, and Motion Ventures, alongside existing investors Shift4Good, GTT Strategic Ventures, KAI Capital, and CDTI (Innvierte SICC), who strengthened their commitment to the company.

The momentum of 2026 has been defined by rapid deployment:

  • The Maersk Milestone: In January 2026, the company completed the installation of four 24-meter eSAILs on the Maersk Trieste. This was the first stage of a 20-unit agreement—the largest order in bound4blue's history — demonstrating that even the most safety-critical segments, like MR tankers, can adopt wind propulsion.
  • The China Expansion: In April 2026, bound4blue completed its first installation on a combination carrier, the MV Baltazar, for Klaveness Combination Carriers. This marked the first project featuring locally manufactured suction sails in China, following strategic partnerships to scale production and logistics capacity.

Wind beyond retrofit

bound4blue’s ambition extends far beyond retrofitting existing vessels. The company’s goal is to see wind propulsion integrated into the very DNA of newbuild vessels, reducing the total demand for the expensive and scarce "green fuels" of the future. By marrying ancient wisdom with aerospace precision, bound4blue is ensuring that the shipping industry doesn't just weather the storm of decarbonization — it uses it to reach its destination. bound4blue’s vision is ultimately simple: to power the world with wind.
